8 Foods You Must Eat In Prague

Prague has been one of my favorite places to visit. It truly has a piece of my heart. You can walk everywhere, every tiny side street is stunning and the food is delicious. When I start to plan a trip, the first thing I search is how to eat like a local. You don’t go to another country for chicken tenders and fries, you must eat the local fare and get the taste of the country and feel the love its people put into their food. So when the Prague planning started, food was first on my mind. Below is the list of goodies I recommend trying while you’re there.

WHAT TO EAT IN PRAGUE

Sweets! Almost every street has a cute little bakery filled with sweets almost to pretty to eat. And if you don’t want to buy any, you can always drool as you walk past and window gaze.

Beer. The Czechs are known for their beers and good thing because it is everywhere! We would be out walking around looking for breakfast and locals would be standing in the courtyard, beer in one hand and sausage in the other. A solid breakfast before work.

Svíčková with dumplings. A classic Sunday family dinner in the Czech Republic. The creamy sauce, salty beef, sweet jam and chewy dumplings are an amazing combination. Have you ever seen a slab of meat with whipped cream on top?

Roast duck, red cabbage and dumplings. The serving of this dish could easily feed two but I will non apologetically say I devoured the entire thing. I’d consider this dish a Czech “chicken and dumplings” but way better. A real comfort food plate.

Goat cheese. If you’re a fan of goat cheese you must order it in Prague. The entire creamy delicious $15.00 block we pay for in the grocery store here is less than $2.00 on the side of a salad in Prague. I think I ate 6 blocks of goat cheese while visiting.

Lattes. The coffee in Prague isn’t particularly strong but it is delicious. Every latte ordered came with the same beautiful fluffy foam top.

The Trdelnik! This is the number one food you should eat while in Prague. And eat it on the daily. Trdelnik stores, carts, and food windows are as common as Starbucks here. It’s a traditional sweet pastry tunnel baked slowly over coal while layers of sugar caramelize the outside. You then have the choice of plain or lined with Nutella or filled with ice cream…need I say more.

UPDATE: I’ve been notified and have been doing some research that shows the Trdelnik is not of Czech origin. HOWEVER, they have adopted this delicious treat back in the 18th century and put a spin on it to make it their own.

Cocktails. The Hemmingway Bar is a must visit on your trip to Prague. The Bartenders are very skilled and put great attention to detail into their drinks. Every cocktail had a story and a reason for its ingredients and it’s the place for Absinthe in Prague. Remember two things when you go; make a reservation as this place is very popular, and read the list of Hemmingway bar rules at every table.
