5 Things You Must Try In Las Vegas

The largest city in Nevada, and larger even than life itself, Las Vegas is a city quite unlike any other. From impromptu wedding ceremonies (yes, we’ve all seen that Friends episode) led by an Elvis impersonator to magic spectacles that defy logic and lions that jump through rings of fire, there’s no dearth of things to do in Sin City. It’s certainly earned its wicked and debauched epithet, because whether its gluttony, greed or lust you’re channelling, the city goes out of its way to tailor to your deadly sin of choice.

Sparkling lights and neon signs top towers of all shapes and sizes, with a world of wickedness within. And at the heart of it all lies the casino. Just like in Scorsese’s namesake movie, slot machines slinging coins into cupped hands fill majestic halls leafed in gold, and peppered with Roman columns. Winnings collected, you’ll feel like a greedy emperor devouring ribbons of juicy grapes. On darker days, it’ll seem like the walls are closing in on you and your depleted earnings. It’s all part of the game.

The greatest gamble of all, however, would be to visit one of the world’s most electrifying cities, without truly exploring it. So, buckle up, as we take your through some of the best attractions and activities in Las Vegas.

Get Brunch

Something that is often overlooked about brunch is how fortunate it is that the beginning of ‘breakfast’ goes so harmoniously with the last letters of ‘lunch’. Would brunch have taken off as ‘leakfast’? Is this why we don’t often eat between lunch and dinner?
‘Linner’ and ‘dunch’ just doesn’t sound right. In any case, brunch is a big deal here. Personally, I may be partial to brunch in D.C., and most people have a few go-to options in their hometowns these days. But the Vegas brunch scene really is on another level. Try the Aces & Ales Tenaya or the Marché Bacchus. Then, with tummies full, head back for a siesta that’ll leave you feeling refreshed the rest of the day.

Try Your Luck in the Casinos

As we’ll show, there is more to do in Las Vegas than gambling. That said, you’re here, aren’t you? Play the Wheel of Fortune, the Triple Red Hot 7s, the Double Jackpot and the Monte Carlo. Spin those wheels and levers in the hope of getting something for close to nothing. All of the top Las Vegas casinos offer a diversity of slot machines and card games, so you can walk in poor and come out rich. The casinos even have exquisite restaurants and hotel rooms to make you comfortable all day. Just make sure you don’t lose track of time, and that you know when to quit.

Join a Poker Room

When it comes to gaming, frankly the endless rows of slot machines at the various casino resorts lose their charm rather quickly. The iconic Las Vegas poker rooms, on the other hand, are worth your time. Resorts like the Bellagio, the Venetian, and more recently the Aria have become known worldwide for their spectacular poker rooms. The latter is owned by MGM, and has award-winning restaurants to complement the growing list of celebrities that frequent their establishment. And, while Lady Luck plays a role, you’ll feel more like you earned your keep from cards than slots.

Get Married

This one is on the extravagant side as far as activities in Las Vegas go, and it should be done with the intention of it being a one-time thing. That said, nobody’s perfect, and we’re not judging. It costs around $100 for a marriage license. Other than that, you can just turn up and get it done on the quick. Nobody at home need know. At the Graceland Wedding Chapel, you’ll even get Elvis to marry you. As in, he’ll marry you with your partner – you won’t be going home with him. Uh-huh.

Climb the Red Rocks

As you may know, I love the awe and mystery of mountains. And after days of neon signs, electric signals and loud music, there’s no remedy for information overload like getting out to nature. The Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area showcases the best Nevada has to offer in…well, red rocks and canyons. And you don’t even have to get out of the car. Simply drive down the 13-mile lane, stopping in at the visitor center to
learn about the fascinating rock formations.
