Provisions No 14 Brunch – Washington, DC

Each year for my birthday, my parents ask me to pick a brunch they can take me to. Man do they know me well. This year I chose Provisions No 14 brunch in Washington, DC. I’d only visited here once for late night cocktail in their upstairs bar so I was excited to try their brunch. Let me say, they DID NOT disappoint.

The menu offers southern comfort dishes with American classics mixed in. We have a family rule of no double dish ordering so we knew we would try a bit of everything. As every brunch should, we started with cocktails. I ordered the grapefruit mimosa, my mom the classic bloody and per usual my dad and Michael ordered beers.

My mimosa was delicious. The vodka was a unique twist and I’ve never been a fan of oj so the grapefruit with mint and basil twist was tart and decadent. My mom’s bloody mary was good, not great. It could have used more spice and flavor but I feel like that’s the norm. If I’d had a girls brunch in (brunch in: settling into a brunch spot for half the day) I would go for the bottomless basil lavender mimosa for sure.

I almost always look at the menu before I go somewhere so I already knew the chicken waffle sandwich would be in my belly that Sunday. Between the fried crispy chicken, sweet maple gravy and thick buttery waffle, I couldn’t wait to order. I sat and looked at Instagram pictures of this sandwich on the drive there.

When the inch thick waffles separated by a half a chicken arrived I was speechless. The sandwich was snuggled next to a mountain of crispy flavorful potatoes and not one, not two, but THREE sauces. The chicken was crispy without being oily, smothered in the sweet & savory gravy and the waffles were chewy and warm. This is one of those dishes you forget you’re in public, and fo full savage mode eating. Not sorry to any other patrons their that day.

Without even asking I could have ordered for the whole table, a fun part of going out to eat with family. Michael’s order is always something labeled Farmer’s breakfast, hungry man breakfast, and in this case ‘All American’ it’s the usual eggs, meats, and some sort of carb. Pretty bland but I’ll hand it to him, it’s always good and safe.

My mom ordered the Huevos Rancheros and my dad the Biscuit & Chorizo Gravy. The HR was pretty good, a little lacking on spice and the ‘Chorizo Gravy’ while flavorful, had no chorizo to speak of. Good thing it came with two eggs to actually fill him.

Overall I would go back to Provison14 for brunch and I would suggest it to others to try for themselves. Next time I’d go for the breakfast tots, the cast iron cinnamon roll and the Forever Summer Guava slushie. Cheers!
